John Daniels was born in Stetchworth in 1896 (Newmarket Q4-1896 3B:513), son of Frederick and Sarah E. DANIELS (née BROWN).
1901 census...Aged 4, he was at Hall Farm Cottages with his father Frederick [50] horse keeper on farm, born Balsham; his mother Sarah E. born West Wickham; brothers Frederick A [20] labourer, born Babraham, Samuel [19] a groom, born Stetchworth, Harry [11] also born in Stetchworth; sister Marion [9] and brother Robert [6] both born in Stetchworth. 1911 census...Aged 14, he was houseboy at 105 Southate Street, Bury St Edmunds, with his sister Emma Jane PERRY [32] born Babraham, and her husband Ernest PERRY and their son Albert. His parents, and brothers Samuel, Harry, Robert and a nephew Samuel Henry DANIELS [12] born Leytonstone, were still at Hall Farm Cottages, Stetchworth. |

He enlisted in Gateshead. The 2nd battalion Durham Light Infantry assembled at The Triangle on 15th September 1916 and at 7:39 pm bombed their way down Straight Trench towards The Quadrilateral. After only 100 yards they were held up. They renewed their attack on the 16th and were again held up by machine gun fire and were relieved by the 1st West Yorkshires. Of their 39 killed, only 4 have identified graves, the rest are commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. John died the same day, in the same battalion of the Durham Light Infantry as Fred Bradford from Stetchworth. see here |
